From Rotoworld...
David Tyree
The New York Daily News suggests that WR David Tyree (knee surgery) could begin the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list.
The Giants figure to find a spot for Tyree, if only because cutting him would be bad for PR. If he goes on PUP, Tyree would be able to return in Week 7. Tyree needs to get healthy as soon as possible because he's in intense competition for a roster spot. Amani Toomer, Plaxico Burress, Steve Smith, and Mario Manningham are virtually assured of making the club. Tyree has to hold off KR Domenik Hixon and 2006 second-round pick Sinorice Moss.
Andre Woodson
Giants rookie QB Andre Woodson (quadriceps) is still not practicing.
Woodson was never hurt in college, but he's dealt with leg injuries since the Combine in February. His odds of making the team don't look great.
Mathias Kiwanuka
Giants OLB Mathias Kiwanuka (broken leg) came through yesterday's practice with no residual problems.
Kiwanuka looks to be close to 100% recovered from the broken left leg and ankle damage that required surgery and caused him to miss the final six games of the regular season as well as the playoffs.
Plaxico Burress
Plaxico Burress (ankle/shoulder/knee) is not expected to have full participation when the Giants open training camp.
Plax is sitting out OTAs to rest his joints after a season in which he showed tremendous toughness. He did not need surgery for any of his ailments and should be 100 percent well before the Giants host the Redskins in Week 1. Still, it would be nice to see him practicing regularly at some point.
Derrick Ward
Derrick Ward (broken leg) says he's "90-95%" healthy and is no longer being limited during Giants offseason workouts.
Ward, who averaged 4.8 YPC and led Giants RBs in receiving last season, is playing on a one-year deal. He's not the threat to Brandon Jacobs' carries Ahmad Bradshaw is, but will be the favorite to start if Jacobs gets hurt again.

Usual Suspects MIA at OTAs

Shockey, Strahan, Others Skip Optional Workouts
Well, you could have guessed that Jeremy Shockey would not be here. The same goes for Michael Strahan and Plaxico Burress. Shockey and Burress are infamous for their absence from non-mandatory activities plus they are both rehabbing from injury.
Then there's Strahan who is again staying away from the team, claiming he may retire. Yeah. We've heard that one before. Come August, I'm sure he'll be in camp.
But Antonio Pierce and Osi Umenyiora usually show up for OTAs. Osi is seeking more money, and he probably will get it. Until he gets assurance that raise is coming we don't plan on seeing him. Pierce is traveling the country trying to launch a career in radio. From what I've seen and heard he's got a long way to go...

Coughlin Puts His Stamp On Defense

Giants Sign Ex-Jaguar DE Renaldo Wynn
The Giants signed another ex-Jacksonville Jaguar defensive player yesterday, inking veteran DE Renaldo Wynn to a contract. Wynn, a 12-year veteran, most recently played in New Orleans and Washington where he was part of the d-line rotation.
Wynn, who attended Notre Dame, was drafted in the first round of the 1997 NFL Draft by Jacksonville while Tom Coughlin was the head coach there.
Earlier this off-season, the Giants signed former Jags S Sammy Knight and LB Danny Clark to help backfill the free agent losses of Gibril Wilson, Kawika Mitchell and Reggie Torbor.
Wynn, who also can play multiple positions on the line, was added as insurance in case Michael Strahan decides not to return. Even if Strahan does not return, the Giants D-line is solid. Wynn joins a group that includes Osu Umenyiora, Justin Tuck, Fred Robbins, Barry Cofield, Jay Alford and this year's 7th round pick, Robert Henderson, who the team is said to be high on.
By snatching up these loyal ex-Jaguars, Coughlin is solidifying his position as the man in charge. When he took over there was much resistance to his methods. These new players are all familiar with those methods and have chosen to come back to play for him.
